Solent Gaffers

Solent Area Committee

The Solent Area of the OGA has an active Committee, working hard to organise events throughout the year. To contact the Committee, solsec [at] oga [dot] org [dot] uk (subject: Message%20for%20the%20Solent%20Committee) (send us an email).

Tim Aspden

Tim took over from Dan Shaw as Area President at the Solent AGM, 28 November 2015.

Tim’s boat is 'Jan Mayen', a gunter rigged motorsailor designed by Holman & Pye and built in Woodbridge in 1964. She has spent most of her life on the East Coast, and as a houseboat on the Thames, until he brought her round to the Solent.

Marion Shirley

I have been Secretary of the Solent Area Gaffers since the beginning of 2014. Based in Southampton, you can find me on 'East Breeze', my Tamarisk 22, in my keeping for four years now. This was me on a sunny day at Cowes Classics in 2013 and I lost that lovely, best-ever hat at Goes in Holland, just before the start of the 2014 Dutch Cross Country Tour!

Sue and David Pennison

Sue is Sailing Secretary for the Solent Area. She sails with husband David on their Memory 'Sepia', pictured here during the Dutch Cross Country Tour, 2014. They are now busy building a Golant Gaffer in their back garden.

David is our Area Treasurer.

Ben Collins

Ben keeps 'Betty II’, a gaff cutter built in Burnham on Crouch, 1921 for sailing and racing on the East Coast, at Keyhaven.

He has the added advantage on the Committee by speaking fluent French and is very happy to liaise and organise trips and events to France. In 2015 he organised and took part in the St Malo Cruise in Company, departing Yarmouth at the end of July.

Dave Percival

Dave started gaffering in a Cornish Crabber Mk1 and now has a Cornish Crabber Pilot Cutter, 'Alice Pellow', based in Emsworth.

Always happy to join in with events in the Solent and further afield, including the Dutch Cross Country Tour in 2014, Dave enjoys helping other members and chatting about gaffers and string. Dave is also the Association Trophy Officer for the OGA.

Tim and Liz Dodwell

Tim and Liz sail ‘High Barbaree’, a 30ft Cornish Crabbers Pilot Cutter, built in Rock in 2001, and based at Bucklers Hard.

They took part in the OGA Round Britain Cruise in 2013, and have sailed to the Baltic, and also to the Brest and Douarnenez Festivals.

They took over as Solent Section Trophy Officers in 2016.

Chris Pryke

Chris is an ex Merchant Navy Marine Engineer and currently sails a Cornish  Crabber 26 on the South Coast.

Although not new to sailing he's still getting familiar with the gaff rig and has a long way to go. He's OK with the iron topsail though!

Simon Darcy

Simon is very handy for his superb commentating skills at events, and ensuring bar takings measure up to the high standards Gaffers are renowned for!

Richard Jacobs

Richard and his wife, Louise, recently traded up from a Memory to the 35ft Ed Burnett gaff cutter, 'Ivy Green'. They’re enjoying getting to know her, both racing and cruising. Based in Hamble they’re frequent visitors to Yarmouth and occasionally further afield. Richard enjoys asking ‘Why?'

Jessica Warren

Jessica sails with her husband Mike on 'Roma', a 100+ year-old gaff cutter, built by Trouts of Topsham as a salmon fishing boat. They keep her on the River Hamble and like to potter around the Solent. Jessica joined the Solent Committee as Treasurer for a couple of years, and took over as Secretary for a few more. She now looks after the Solent Area website, pictured here relaxing with Pat Dawson after the Annual Race, 2008.

Dick and Pat Dawson

As Elder Gaffers in the Solent Area, Dick and Pat have spent many years on the Committee and have been responsible for organising Yogaff for the Committee since its first event. They sail from Yarmouth in 'Lone Wolf'. Pat is the OGA Boat Register Editor, and has now stepped down from the Yogaff part of Committee.
