Join the OGA
- We are a community that welcomes anyone with an interest in traditional sailing boats.
- Our members’ boats are as likely to be brand new as they are to be 100 years old. They are usually gaff, lug or spritsail rigged but some are bermudan rigged boats of historic merit.
- You do not need a boat to join and some skippers will be looking for crew.
- We have local organisations in all the main sailing areas in the UK and Ireland and members in many continents worldwide.
- We organise activities both on and off the water, including cruising in company, communal boat building, winter lectures and visits, quiz evenings and even the occasional race.
- Many of our sailing events are organised with facilities for small open trailerable boats.

You are welcome to join whether you own a boat or not, and if you do, whether or not it is old or gaff-rigged!

Direct Debit is unfortunately ONLY available to members with a UK bank account.
All membership payments will cover membership to the end of the year, and summer joiners will also receive the Spring issue of the Gaffers Log. (We are all volunteers, and year-round renewals cause a LOT more work!) However, if you join after 1 October your membership both starts immediately and is effective until the end of the following year.
If you apply between July and September, we will check whether you want to join immediately (our membership costs are low!) or whether you would prefer to have the Membership Secretary defer starting your membership till October. (It is also possible to contact the Membership secretary – see the contact tabs at the top right hand corner of this page – asking for a reminder in October!!)
Membership benefits
- a full-colour printed magazine, the ‘Gaffers Log’, mailed three times a year;
- e-newsletters from your Area;
- notification of events in your Area;
- notification of Small Boat events (if you have indicated your interest on the form);
- access to information on the OGA website, eg online Boat Register, photography competition;
- inclusion of your boat, if you have one, in the OGA online Boat Register with the option to edit details.
- advertise your boat
for sale, at no charge, in the Gaffers Log for three editions and on the OGA Website until sold (Boats may be readvertised in the Gaffers Log if the price is reduced, subject to availability of space)
Subscription costs
Individual member: entitled to one vote at the AGM and other general meetings (Direct Debit £35.50, Card or PayPal £38, ).
Family member: partner and children under 18, entitled to two votes (Direct Debit £41.50, Card or PayPal £43.50 ).
Junior (under 25): entitled to one vote (by Card, PayPal or Direct Debit £6.50).
If you join after 1 October your membership starts immediately and is effective until the end of the following year.
