It is with deep regret that I must announce the passing of Neal Hill after being diagnosed with cancer a year ago. Neal was OGA Scottish Secretary for many years, a post he worked hard at until illness forced him to resign; his cheery anecdotes and tales in OGA Members' newsletter, 'Gaffers Log' will be sadly missed.

Above all, Neal was a sailor, taking his beloved 'Naiad' from the Shetland Isles to Brittany and almost every port and anchorage in between. Not one to boast about his knowledge and experience, although in his own quiet way he was a fund of great yarns, casually introducing experiences that lesser sailors can only marvel at. A quick hail to 'Naiad' invariably brought Neal’s silver head from below and a quick offer of coffee or a dram, usually if not always relative to the time of day.

Neal's funeral will be on 29 March at St Mary’s, Ponteland, 1100.

Neal is survived by his wife, Morag, his son and daughter to whom our sympathies and best wishes go. Neal will be a hard act to follow in any of his capacities and I, for one, feel richer for having known him.
