Solent Gaffers



Solent Area Committee

Sue Pennison

Sue and David Pennison have been Solent OGA members since 2008. Lifelong sailors, they have been regular attendees at OGA events and have waved the Gaffer flag at many other events in the Solent. Originally sailing a Memory 19 'Sepia', they launched their home build Golant Gaffer 'Satellite' in Spring 2018 and are enjoying getting to grips with it. Previously the Sailing Secretary, Sue took over the role of President from Tim Aspden in 2018.


Jeremy Retford

Jeremy sails 'Margherita', a Shilling class yacht, built in 2008 with the Solent OGA. He was elected to the role of Area Secretary at the AGM in 2018.



David Pennison

Married to Sue Pennison, elected to the Area President role in 2018, David was previously a Sailing Instructor and self employed joiner.

He is our Area Treasurer.


Tim and Liz Dodwell

Tim and Liz sail ‘High Barbaree’, a 30ft Cornish Crabbers Pilot Cutter, built in Rock in 2001, and based at Bucklers Hard.

They took part in the OGA Round Britain Cruise in 2013, and have sailed to the Baltic, and also to the Brest and Douarnenez Festivals.

They took over as Solent Section Trophy Officers in 2016.



Richard Jacobs

Richard and his wife, Louise, traded up from a Memory to the 35ft Ed Burnett gaff cutter, 'Ivy Green'. They’re enjoy both racing and cruising. Based in Hamble they’re frequent visitors to Yarmouth and occasionally further afield. Richard enjoys asking ‘Why?' and is the Solent Area Sailing Secretary.


Jessica Warren

Jessica joined the Solent Committee as Treasurer for a couple of years, and took over as Secretary for a few more.

She now looks after the Solent Area website, pictured here relaxing with Pat Dawson after the Annual Race, 2008.


Alastair Wilson

Alastair joined the Solent Area committee in Autumn 2018 as a general committee member. Based in Lymington, he sails 'Paola', a gaff yawl built 1925 in Calais. He has owned her jointly with his son and daughter for over ten years. They sail mostly around the Solent where 'Paola' has spent most of her life since 'arriving' from France in the 1940s.



Dick and Pat Dawson

As Elder Gaffers in the Solent Area, Dick and Pat have spent many years on the Committee and have been responsible for organising Yogaff for the Committee since its first event. They sail from Yarmouth in 'Lone Wolf'. Pat was the OGA Boat Register Editor for many years, stepping down in 2018 and has also stepped down from the Yogaff part of Committee.
