In 2018, the Gaffers will be celebrating at Yarmouth from Thursday 31st May to Sunday 3th June.
The Solent Gaffers will celebrate at Yarmouth from Thursday 31st May to Sunday 3rd June 1018. We will eat, drink, sing, dance and the event will include the Solent Gaffers Sixtieth Birthday Race. The party will be open to gaff, sprit and lug rigged boats, whether or not skippers are members of the OGA. OGA members are welcome to bring any boat. The shore-side Old Gaffers Festival will not take place in 2018. This will be a private party for us and our friends.
Boats will arrive at the earliest on Thursday, 31st May. Skippers should note their times to qualify for the passage race to the event. There will be a prize for the longest passage travelled, including stopovers. Crews will be invited to a welcome drink in our marquee at Yarmouth Sailing Club on Thursday evening. An optional DIY BBQ will follow in the grounds of the Royal Solent Yacht Club with drinks available to buy from the Hudleston Bar.
On Friday, you will be able to collect your welcome pack with free birthday pennant for the first 100 boats to register.
Friday 1st June sees the return of the popular Dutch Gaffel Race. Plot your own course round selected buoys in this time limited event. In the evening, crews have the option of dining a la carte at the Royal Solent Yacht Club. Alternatively, book early for the buffet and music night at the Yarmouth Sailing Club. Music in 2018 will be provided by local band Folklore.
Saturday 2nd June sees the main event; our Solent Gaffers Sixtieth Birthday Race round the cans, organised as ever by the fantastic team at the Royal Solent Yacht Club. In the afternoon, join in the Fun on the Water and race your Log.
Dinner in the evening at the Royal Solent Yacht Club will be followed by a special one time only knees up; a Celidh led by local group the Caulkheads.
Skippers may choose to compete on Sunday in the Royal Solent Queens Jubilee Race. This race is also open to Bermudan rigged boats.
The Solent Gaffers will deal with berthing for entrants from Thursday through Saturday nights. Harbour staff will do their best to accommodate special requests made to the gaffers at the time of booking. All berths will be walk ashore but you may be asked to raft up.
If you plan to stay other nights, or if you are not a member of the Gaffers and you do not bring a gaff/lug or sprit sailed boat, you need to book directly with Yarmouth Harbour.
