Solent Gaffers’ President Sue Pennison caught up with Marion Shirley on a sunny day at the Elephant boat yard to make a presentation in recognition of Marion’s work as Secretary of the Solent Gaffers.
Here is Marion’s letter of thanks:
Dear Sue, and all the Solent Gaffers,
I’d like to thank you so much for the new ensign and a great set of signal flags.
I’m a relatively recent member of the Solent Gaffers, having joined in 2004 and I’ve loved every minute. It can’t have been long after I joined that I took on the role of Treasurer. I thought that if I were handling the money, then I would get to know people and that I did. I’ve been at every Yarmouth Festival since then and almost every Annual Race and Rally. I’ve enjoyed other rallies and meets and trips further afield, particularly to Poole. The highlight must have been OGA50 in 2013. There were banks in Cowes then and every afternoon I deposited a pile of cash and almost made the books balance. By then I also had a slightly beefier boat. In 2014, the year that I also stepped up as secretary, I joined the Dutch Cross Country Tour. Then I took East Breeze to Brest in 2016. Now we’ve had OGA55, I’ve retired and am planning a new adventure which sees the boat back in France at the beginning of what I hope will be an extended European cruise northwards. I really can’t be Secretary any more and I’m very grateful to Jeremy for stepping up.
On the trip to Brest, I lost my old sewn ensign when the staff, which was very damp, came off worst in an argument with the main sheet in confused seas off Treguier. It disappeared with the ensign over the stern. Now I have a lovely new ensign to take out to the boat next week. I’m sure I will make good use of the flags at festivals on the Morbihan and then at Paimpol in 2019 and hopefully at others as I continue on my way.
I still live in Southampton so please let me know if you are around and especially if you are looking for crew.
Thank you all for your friendship and support.
